Schumacast, Episode 27: Flawless (1999)

Continuing to focus on smaller indie works, Joel Schumacher directed the first original screenplay he'd written in 14 years, a queer crime comedy about a conservative stroke victim who starts going to a transwoman neighbor for vocal lessons.

In our episode, we mentioned Nashom Wooden and his group The Ones. Sadly, in the time since we recorded this episode, we've learned Nashom passed away in 2020.

As mentioned, his group The Ones submitted a song called "Flawless" to the film's soundtrack which ended up becoming a hit tune in dance clubs. Here's footage of a performance:

The song ended up charting in Europe, leading to an official music video in 2001:

In 2004, George Michael sampled "Flawless" as the backing music to his own hit single "Flawless (Go to the City)", which also charted in Europe, albeit peaked one position lower than the original song.
